Apollo-Era Omega Speedmaster Professional
Not all "Speedies" are created equal! As the legend has grown, countless versions of Omega Speedmaster Professional have been spawned in recent years, truly beating the "moon watch" theme into the ground. However, back in the day, there was only one "Moon Watch", flight-certified by NASA for manned space missions, at any given time. This one is the real deal: A genuine NASA "moon watch" made to Apollo-era specifications.
The 861 calibre of this watch has a number of improvements over the earlier 321 Speedmasters: The beats-per-hour (BPH) was significantly increased from 321's 18,000 to 21,600 BPH, facilitating a noticable increase in timekeeping ability. With this extra energy in the regulating system, the watch-geeks in Switzerland determined that the delicate Breguet-style hairpring of the 321, which required guard fingers to protect it from being tangled up in a shock, was deemed no longer necessary, and a much more shock resistant flat hairspring could be used instead. Additionally, the shuttle cam system replaced the older column wheel system, greatly simplified control of the chronograph function with no loss in reliability or accuracy. And everything else? Top-quality Omega, by Lemania, of course!
Condition: I've owned this watch for most of its life. The outer "tachymeter" bezel is perhaps the weakest component, and could easily be replaced if one had a mind to. The case, dial, hands and especially the movement are in excellent, near-mint condition. The band is a modern, genuine Omega Speedmaster strap with stainless steel deployment clasp. The photos you see of the movement are from the last complete service performed in 2026, so it's fresh and ready to go!
Reference No (inside case back): 145022-71 ST
Movement Serial Nr: 32217382
Lugtip to lugtip length: 48mm
Case diameter excluding crown: 42mm
I'm old enough to remember how things were before the "moon watch" hype really got going. Before the "Apollo 13" movie and all the hype, these watches were simply tools. If you were planning on hammering up some rock samples on the surface of the moon, and timing a retro-burn on the way home (see the movie "Apollo 13"), the Speedmaster Professional was your choice: No vanity nonsense; it was all business. This is your chance to own a classic that is repaired correctly!
